UBC Finds More than 30% of Campbell River’s Children Vulnerable

Researchers at UBC’s Human Early Learning Partnership find that over one third of Campbell River children enter Kindergarten not quite ready to learn*. These children may not know how to take turns or make friends. They may not be able to hold a pencil or listen as a story is read. They may not know how to ask to use the washroom or ask for help with a zipper. Such seemingly trivial difficulties can strip the Kindergarten experience of its rich educational potential. What can parents do? Talk to an early childhood educator, a Kindergarten teacher or your local public health nurse about your child’s development. Be sure to have your child’s ears and eyes checked by qualified professionals prior to Kindergarten entry. A child’s early years can be life changing. Don’t wait. Take time now to ensure your child is on track.
